I wish to use the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags, what are the rules surrounding their use?
Answer
Aboriginal Flag
On 25 January 2022 the Aboriginal Flag was made ‘freely available for public use,’ however there are still some limitations to this. As a college NMTAFE needs to make sure any use of the Aboriginal Flag is:
- In a respectful and dignified manner.
- Reproduced completely and accurately (including keeping the correct colours and the correct pattern).
- Not covered in any words, illustrations, or objects.
It is also important to attribute Harold Thomas, as creator of the Flag.
Torres Strait Islander Flag
Permission is not required to fly the Torres Strait Islander flag; however, it is required to reproduce the flag. Also, the original colours of the flag must be used and where appropriate, recognition is to be given to the flag’s designer, the late Mr Bernard Namok.
