I need to conduct lessons remotely in a virtual environment, are there any special rules for this?

Answer

While teaching in class allows  lecturers to use a wide variety of copyrighted material, it is not entirely clear what is permitted for virtual/remote lessons. Please consider the following points when conducting lessons remotely.

  • Only use content for purposes education and instruction.
  • Only use the material that you need (extracts etc.), ensuring it gets taken down/archived when it is no longer required.
  • Ensure the lesson/recording is password protected and not downloadable.
  • Instruct students to only watch/access the material at home or in private.
  • Do Not teach lessons over YouTube or social media.

Assume that any special Copyright Rules and dispensations that were allowed during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns no longer apply.

Also make sure the following warning is attached to any recorded lessons that have been placed online.
