How do I label and attribute course materials correctly?

Answer

When attributing copyrighted works, the attribution should be as close to the copyrighted work as feasibly possible. Directly below an image or in a page’s footer for example.

If you’re using copyrighted material in a PowerPoint presentation it is fine to have an individual slide at the front or at the end with a full attribution list, and smaller attributions within the presentation itself.

Keep in mind that attributions are different to warning labels. Warning labels are there to inform people that the material they are using may be subject to copyright, whereas attributions are an acknowledgement of the copyright owners themselves.

Below is a short guide of the different types of attributions, and what information needs to be put into them.

Note: Hard brackets are where you need to input the information yourself.
